Objective:
The objective of Rummy is to be the first player to score a certain number of points (usually 100) by forming sets and runs of cards and getting rid of all the cards in your hand.
Setup:
Rummy is typically played with 2 players, but it can also be played with 3 or 4 players using multiple decks. Each player is dealt 10 cards in a 2-player game and 7 cards in a 3 or 4-player game. The rest of the cards are placed face-down in the center to form the stockpile, and the top card is turned face-up to start the discard pile.
Gameplay:
1. Starting the Game:
The player to the dealer’s left goes first. On each turn, a player must draw one card from either the stockpile or the discard pile. The drawn card is added to the player’s hand.
2. Forming Sets and Runs:
The main goal in Rummy is to form sets and runs of cards. A set is three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., three 7s or four Queens), and a run is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 5, 6, and 7 of hearts). Aces can be used as low cards (A-2-3) or high cards (Q-K-A).
3. Discarding:
After drawing a card, the player must choose one card from their hand to discard onto the discard pile. The discarded card must be one that the player does not need to complete a set or run. The objective is to gradually reduce the number of cards in your hand by forming sets and runs and getting rid of unwanted cards.
4. Going Gin(declaring Rummy):
If a player can form all their cards into sets and runs, they can “go Gin.” To do this, the player declares “Gin” and reveals their hand. The opponent can lay off any unmatched cards they have onto the sets and runs formed by the Gin player. If the Gin player has no unmatched cards, they earn a bonus for going Gin.
5. Ending the Game:
The game continues with players taking turns drawing and discarding cards until one player gets rid of all their cards or until the stockpile is empty. When this happens, the hand is over. Players then calculate their scores based on the value of unmatched cards in their hand. The opponent can also lay off any remaining unmatched cards onto the winner’s sets and runs to reduce their penalty score.
6. Scoring:
In Gin Rummy, the value of the cards in unmatched sets and runs counts as penalty points. Number cards are worth their face value, while face cards (Jacks, Queens, and Kings) are worth 10 points each. Aces are worth 1 point if used in a low run (A-2-3) and 11 points if used in a high run (Q-K-A). The player who goes Gin scores a bonus, and the player with the lower penalty score wins the game.
7. Winning the Game:
The game continues with additional hands until one player reaches the predetermined winning score (usually 100 points), and they are declared the overall winner.
